Have you considered filters? We’re not ta Have you considered filters?

We’re not talking about the kind of filters that make you look 10 years younger on the Gram. Or filters you add in post production because, although editing is important, some results you can only get through the lens. There are an infinite number of filters to choose from, but for Climate & Weather, consider adding a natural density or polarizing filter to your lens.

Neutral density (ND) filters reduce the amount of light that enters the camera so that you can shoot long exposures without the risk of overexposing your image.
Polarizing filters refine the visible spectrum of light to eliminate determinate frequencies, removing glare and increasing contrast and colour vibrance.

"Climate change is making our lives harder, someti "Climate change is making our lives harder, sometimes unbearably so. The injustice, however, is that climate change is mostly caused by adults in developed nations. And yet it mostly hurts children in developing countries, especially when you think about our dwindling future." Nkosilathi Nyathi, #climatewarrior, Zimbabwe.

#PhotoTip: Sometimes, it’s a waiting game.

There are rare times when you arrive at a place just as the light is perfect and the scene is playing to your theme. Most of the time, you don’t. The ideal conditions to realise your creative vision for Climate & Weather may take hours, sometimes days, to be perfect. Chasing your award-winning shot takes time.

Human figures make for a perfect reference of scale and sense of perspective. Seeing a person against a stormy sky enables the viewer to imagine the vast landscape that surrounds us.

#PhotoTip : Find the right Depth of Field (DOF) #PhotoTip : Find the right Depth of Field (DOF)

When shooting landscapes, and many weather/climate shots will be landscapes, you want your depth of field to be as deep as possible. Contrary to how it may seem, closing your camera’s diaphragm as much as possible won’t actually achieve this result. In fact, the sharpest point of a lens usually sits a couple of steps lower than its smaller opening.

#PhotoTip : Simplify your composition Less #PhotoTip : Simplify your composition

Less is more. Only so much information can be contained in a single image. Trying to fit too many elements in your viewfinder will only confuse the viewer. Simplicity is easier to understand, and this makes simple images more attractive. There are multiple ways to achieve this: focus on a single detail, fill the frame with one main visual, or use natural elements to isolate the main subject.
