As part of the Summer Institute in Computational S As part of the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS) in Uyo, Nigeria, Wiki Loves Africa Community Facilitator, Hilary Ogali delivered an engaging session introducing participants to the Wikimedia movement and its role in advancing open knowledge.

The session explored how Wikimedia's global community of volunteers collaborates to create free, reliable, and accessible knowledge through projects including Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, and Wikivoyage. Participants gained insight into how these platforms support research, education, cultural preservation, and multilingual knowledge sharing.

Hilary also highlighted the importance of verifiable information, transparent editing, and open licensing, while demonstrating how Wikimedia's technology ecosystem—including MediaWiki, Wikidata, APIs, structured data, and community-developed tools—enables collaboration, innovation, and the responsible reuse of knowledge.

By connecting computational social science with open knowledge, the session encouraged participants to explore how Wikimedia can support research, data-driven inquiry, and knowledge equity across Africa.

Thank you to all the participants involved!
